Mid-Century Modern Door “Reveal”

If the door was installed almost a year ago, is it still a reveal?

I’m just looking through the glass of that picture above and you can really see all the crap on my kitchen counter. Welcome to my real life. I see the perennial water jug, a roll of paper towels, my coffee mug, and a glass of wine. Pinterest worthy? Why not. Wait, are there two wine bottles there?

It was definitely not part of the initial plans to install a new door during our renovation. I just didn’t feel like we could afford one because I knew doors were a lot of money. But as the renovation progressed it became clear that our old door was simply not going to work with the new style that was unfolding. We considered holding off until a future date, but it just made sense to deal with the “door situation” while the renovation was underway.

Here is the old door:

And here is the look from the interior (below). I know, it’s a bad picture, but it’s the only one I could find with the view from the inside. You can see its traditional style with ornate glass and small windows in the sidelites.

We bought the door from a local company. They had just come out with a series of Mid-Century modern doors and I wouldn’t be surprised if I was their very first customer. Then I came across this photo and I had to have that hardware:

I somehow found that door handle at Rejuvenation. And I couldn’t resist getting the matching door bell. I came so close to painting my door the same chartreuse colour as the picture above. In fact, we ordered the door unpainted so we could do exactly that, but it arrived factory painted black. Peter and my son really liked the colour so we decided to keep it (plus it was a free $400 paint job!). I figure if we ever get bored of the black we can always go for the chartreuse.

Here is our contractor, James, installing the new door:

When the door was installed I could not believe how much light came in from those sidelites. They made such a difference. Everything was great until we realized the distance between the door handle and deadbolt was smaller than needed for my fancy new door handle. My contractor managed to get them to re-make the door, which meant having to wait another month, but in the end it was worth it. Thank goodness for scope creep, because I love this door.
